The miners and Saint Barbara
Gossensaß owes its first period of prosperity to mining. As early as the beginning of the 15th century, silver, lead and iron ore were being extracted in the Pflersch Valley. At its peak around 1540, more than 10,000 miners are said to have belonged to the guild; from 1524, the powerful Augsburg merchant family Fugger took control of the mines.
Our namesake also dates from this era: the miners built the chapel in honour of Saint Barbara, their patron saint. With its late Gothic winged altarpiece, it still stands directly next to the parish church today – and gave our residence its name.
The fact that your host Barbara shares this name makes this connection particularly personal for us and lends the history of the house an additional layer of meaning.
A new chapter
In 2024, Hugo acquired this historically significant house in the heart of Gossensaß – with the desire to preserve its special character while creating new levels of comfort.
During the careful renovation, many of the original elements were retained: historic vaulted ceilings, traditional wooden ceilings and parts of the old masonry still tell the story of the house's long history. At the same time, we have modernised the residence with great attention to detail and adapted it to the expectations of today's travellers.
The result is a collection of bright, comfortable apartments that combine the charm of bygone eras with timeless alpine design.
From summer 2026, a new chapter begins for the house as Residence Barbara – and we look forward to welcoming you as our guests and sharing a piece of this history with you.
