The village looks back on an eventful history: from a medieval miners' settlement to a fashionable Belle Époque spa resort to today's active holiday destination. Henrik Ibsen spent his summers here, Emperor Franz Joseph elevated the village to a market municipality — traces of this past can be found everywhere.
